Stop Poverty!

In PSHE I teach a unit on Development. We look at what poverty is, where poverty exists, how we measure poverty, what causes poverty and what we can do to stop poverty.

A Year 9 pupil was shocked to learn that every 5 seconds a child dies due to world debt and that in LEDCs as soon as a child is born it owes $482. She wrote to her MP (Stephen Hesford MP) explaining how bad the situation is for some children today. Her letter was very well written and she got her point across very well.

She received a reply from Stephen Hesford saying he was impressed with the interest she had taken in this issue and with the way she expressed her points clearly. Therefore he is writing to the Secretary of State for International Development on her behalf and will contact her as soon as he has a reply!

I was very impressed with this proactive approach!
