Pensby High School for Girls has had the privilege to take part in the “Lessons from Auschwitz” education programme run by the Holocaust Educational Trust. The programme gives an opportunity for two Sixth Form students from every school in the country to travel in one day to Auschwitz in Poland, the most notorious of the death camps set up by the Nazis during the Second World War.
Two of our Year 13 students, Ashleigh Tooze and Rachel Powell, were accompanied by Miss Kirk from the History Department. The journey was exhausting, having to travel there and back on the same day, but at the same time it was a very sobering and rewarding experience. The fact that the weather was very cold and wet only added to the sense of suffering that the victims must have gone through.
he girls have attended additional seminars in Manchester to supplement their understanding of the Holocaust and through this they have had the opportunity to listen to and question a survivor of the camps who spent some time in Auschwitz. As a result of this experience the girls will be taking assemblies for each year group in January to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. A big thank you to the girls and Miss Kirk for representing the school so well and thanks also to Mr Prescott of the History Department for organising and administering the visit.
