A French play was performed in the school hall on Thursday 3rd December for pupils in Year 8 and 9 and girls who are taken French GCSE in Year 10. It was very funny, live music was played on a French accordion and there was lots of audience interaction, it was enjoyed by all.
The Play – The Year 1540
A young English Knight, William Babbington, is travelling to France in search of a beautiful French mademoiselle. But not for himself, he has been sent by King Henry VIII lo find a suitable wife - his fourth! Once he has located a suitable match, he is to paint her portrait and return to England to collect his reward.
William arrives in France totally ill-equipped. He can't speak much French, he has no idea where he is going and, most importantly, he can't even paint! With his very stubborn horse, William marches off
to the nearest town.
After a confusing and rather awkward encounter with a French peasant, William learns of a beautiful young Mademoiselle called Catherine living in small castle nearby.
If this Catherine is truly beautiful all William needs to do is convince her to be King Henry VIII's wife and paint her portrait. Easy? Not if you can't speak French or paint.
The mischievous Catherine proves quite a handful for this naive English knight. For just gaining a glimpse of her puts his inventiveness to the test and his body in the moat! If William is to win the reward he is going to need all his wit, charm and determination.
