This is a centre to enable children who have some form of visual impairment to be integrated in the mainstream classroom. Pupils come from both the Girls' and Boys' High Schools. Full integration is achieved in two main ways: direct classroom support is given when it is necessary for safety reasons, through description of demonstrations and help with practical work and for access to text written on the board; the students are also supplied with modified copies of the materials that the rest of the class is using, to help them to be as independent as possible. When necessary Braille can be used as the working medium.
Regular assessment of the pupil's educational and visual needs is carried out by a member of Base Staff to ensure that any necessary adjustments to the level and type of support can be made.
